5 Gen Z Phrases that Beffudle Me

Officially, I hate generational stereotypes. Unofficially, I am a mid-millennial with a penchant for brunch, house plants and accumulating debt (oops). Let it be known though — I despise avocado.

However, one thing that makes me keenly aware of generational shifts is language. As a UX Writer recently, I’ve been working on products intended for a Gen-Z audience, and have been researching insights and language.

As much as I hate to admit it, there are some phrases I just do not understand. And there are some that come up with such frequency that I get annoyed that I do not understand them. So naturally, I’ve put together some of my favourite least-favourites, if that makes sense.

Yeet 🗑

Is it a verb? Is it a noun? Is it a pronoun? I first saw the word “Yeet” in the title of a YouTube video a couple of years ago, and the thumbnail showed someone in a canoe. That’s why I assumed “a yeet” was some kind of canoe, and I didn’t investigate any further.

Until more videos started saying “yeet” and it became a thing on Twitter, particularly in combination with “it”. Ah, so not a boat.

Apparently, it’s a verb meaning “to hurl or throw forcefully”. I don’t know why, but it makes me feel uncomfortable. As a content designer, I immediately think, “Can I replace the word…
